SLAM - University of Milan Language Centre manages 3-credit language proficiency tests of one of the languages of the European Union - French, Spanish and German - for students of Liberal Studies in Communication. Philosophy, Humanities, Human Science of Environment, Landscape and Territory and Philosophical Sciences students can choose this language proficiency as an elective activity, according to their programme.
The required levels are the following:
- French: B1
- Spanish: B1
- German: A2
Students who already hold a language certificate among those accepted by the University, earned for no more than 3 years at the time of submission and at a level equal to or higher than that required, can ask for validation by uploading it through the InformaStudenti platform, 'language test' category. The certificate must certify proficiency in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
Students who do not have a valid language certificate will have to sit a placement test (it is not allowed to sit the test in more than one language). Test sessions are held according to the schedule published on the "Other Foreign Languages" homepage.
If a student registered for the test is unable to attend, they are required to cancel their registration via UNIMIA before registration closes. In the event of unforeseen circumstances on the day of the test, due to medical or work-related reasons or disruptions to public transport, appropriate supporting documentation (e.g. a medical certificate) must be submitted within one week of the test date. Students who fail to withdraw in time or do not provide valid justification for an unexpected absence will not be permitted to retake the test for the same language within the same academic year.
Each student can take the test in the chosen language only once per academic year, i.e. the test can be sat again in the following academic year.
Students who pass the test at the required level will receive the corresponding language assessment credits, according to their degree programme. Those who fail the test will have the opportunity to attend a 40-hour language course. Courses take place in the second semester and attendance is compulsory. At the end of the course, students have to sit an end-of-course test. In order to be admitted to the end-of-course test, students must have attended at least 75% of classes. Those who do not attend the required number of classes will not be admitted to the end-of-course test, but they can sit the placement test again during the first semester of the following academic year.
Unlike the compulsory Placement test in English, which must be taken by first-year students, the language proficiency tests in French, Spanish and German can be taken by students of any year.
